Case study of Cervical Dystonia (or Spasmodic Torticollis)

A middle-aged Asian woman immigrated to the UK in 2018. In 2019, without any obvious cause, she began experiencing involuntary neck twisting and spasms, which worsened with emotional excitement and fatigue. Over the past few years, she has seen numerous GPs and specialists and undergone various examinations, including a brain MRI, but no abnormalities were found. She has received multiple Botox injections, which significantly improved the left-right twisting spasms, but no helf of forward-backward spasms, which became ineffective with further Botox injections. She has also been prescribed antidepressants and muscle relaxants, but these have been ineffective, and doctors have no better solutions. The patient's normal life has been significantly affected; she has been unable to attend social events such as weddings for over two years, causing her great distress.

Two months ago, when she came to see me, she appeared distressed and exhausted. Her head was tilted back, chin raised, and she experienced neck muscle soreness. Her movement was generally normal, with normal left-right rotation, and no abnormalities in limb movement or sensation. Sleep was fair, bowel movements were normal, but her appetite was poor. Her tongue was pale with a thin white coating, and her pulse was deep and thready. Examination revealed normal cervical spine range of motion, mild tenderness in the posterior neck muscles, and no muscle nodules. Physiological reflexes were normal, and pathological reflexes were not elicited. The TCM acupuncture diagnosis was obstruction of the Du meridian and internal wind in the brain. Treatment focused on brain acupuncture.

Prescription and Treatment Process: Acupuncture points included the scalp acupuncture Central area , the Foot motor-sensory area, Balance area, Mania control area, Fengfu (DU-16), Fengchi (GB-20), Dazhui (DU-14), Lieque (LU-7), and Houxi (SI3), etc. The needles were rapidly rotated and retained for 20 minutes. Treatment was administered weekly for three weeks, then reduced to once every two to three weeks. After the first treatment, the patient reported some relief from spasms; by the third treatment, about half of the spasms had subsided. Treatment was stopped for three weeks due to family reasons, resulting in some relapse. Significant improvement was observed for one week after the fifth treatment, but again, after a three-week break for the Christmas and New Year holidays, or other breaks, the improvement returned to 10%-20%. Treatment is currently ongoing.

Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is an uncommon neurodegenerative disorder of unknown etiology, for which no curative treatment exists in either Western medicine or traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Increasing numbers of patients are turning to acupuncture for symptom management.

Motor Neuron Disease (MND) is an uncommon neurodegenerative disorder of unknown etiology, for which no curative treatment exists in either Western medicine or traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Increasing numbers of patients are turning to acupuncture for symptom management. TCM categorizes MND under "wei syndrome" (flaccidity), traditionally treated via Yangming meridian points. Contemporary developments in neuro-acupuncture view MND as involving the brain and spinal cord, implicating the spleen, liver, and kidneys. Clinical patterns include brain marrow malnutrition, brain yang deficiency, and stagnation of brain collaterals.

Motor Neuron Disease (MND), also known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or "Lou Gehrig's disease," is a rare and progressive neurological condition characterized by degeneration of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. This degeneration leads to muscle wasting, weakness, impaired motor function, and eventual respiratory failure. The disease's public profile has been raised by well-known cases such as Stephen Hawking and Cai Lei.

Modern TCM and neuro-acupuncture attribute MND pathology to brain and spinal cord dysfunction。 Treatment focuses on scalp acupuncture and Dao-qi techniques, targeting areas such as the Motor area, First Speech area, Sensory area, Foot Motor-sensory area, Balance area, and Central area. Key Dao-qi points include DU16 (Fengfu), DU15 (Yamen), DU14 (Dazhui), DU9 (Zhiyang), DU4 (Mingmen), RN23 (Lianquan), and RN12 (Zhongwan).

MND remains an incurable neurodegenerative condition, with ALS being the most aggressive type. Acupuncture, particularly scalp and qi-guiding techniques, may help alleviate symptoms, slow progression, and enhance patients' quality of life and survival. Successful outcomes require thorough understanding of neuroscience and TCM neuro-acupuncture, as well as clear communication with patients and families regarding prognosis.

Four days, from Friday to Monday, with Monday being the Queen's Birthday holiday. The trainees are mainly from all over Australia, with a small number from Malaysia and Singapore. It is conceivable that they have overcome many difficulties and spent time and money to study. Some of the intended applicants gave up because the epidemic has not yet completely ended. As a lecturer, I can only do my best to impart what I know, clinical perception, experience, etc. to the students without reservation, and guide the students in location, needling, techniques, etc. The on-site demonstration, consultation, and treatment are as detailed, comprehensive, and practical as possible. All the students persisted until the end of the course at 5:00 pm on the last day, and none of them left early. Even at the last minute, they were reluctant to give up, applauded and thanked, and said that they were looking forward to seeing me again in soon future. A participant feedback me today, "We really want to thank you for teaching us scalp acupuncture and your experience. I have learned a lot from you. When I come back to Singapore, I have used your method to treat some depression. stroke and pain patients, the effect is really extraordinary. The effect is really improved. I will do more research and study in this area, and I will notify you first if there is any new discovery.”This is a subtitle for your new post

Some clinical studies have shown that acupuncture can improve the physical activity of ALS patients and improve the muscle strength of the limbs and eliminate the severity of clinical symptoms and restore the ability for normal activity in their daily life. Acupuncture effectively improve muscle atrophy, muscle weakness, speech dysphagia, and other symptoms in patients with ALS as well. In China, it is applied in clinical trials in some hospital and results in better outcomes by comparing with control groups.

New paper just published: The Use of Du 16 feng fu in the Treatment of Depression and Anxiety: Significant, Immediate Improvements in Two Severe Cases

Two cases are reported where the specific needling of the acupuncture point Du 16 feng fu appeared to provide immediate and lasting clinical improvements for two patients suffering from severe depression and anxiety where a range of other treatments, acupuncture and conventional, had failed. Conventionally, acupuncture treatment of psychological disorders has focussed predominantly on the peripheral channels and organ pattern syndrome differentiation. Our results indicate that treatment strategies which more directly target the du mai, brain and autonomic nervous system may be clinically more effective than conventional body acupuncture alone for the treatment of psychological disorders; and that Du 16 feng fu may be uniquely effective. This approach is supported by classical TCM theory, the neurocentric understanding of psychological disorders in modern medicine, as well as the increasing evidence for the central role that various neurological mechanisms play in acupuncture’s therapeutic effects.

In this paper, the authors pointed out that loss of smell and taste could be an early signature of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). In traditional Chinese medicine impairment of meridians, disturbed Brain-Shen and dysfunction of the Zang-Fu organs are the key pathology of loss of smell and taste by COVID-19. traditional Chinese medicine treatment, including herbal medicine and acupuncture should be provided in time.

           Abstract:

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by SARS-CoV2 and is still not yet under complete control and no cure is available until this moment. It is still unpredictable to expect vaccination available worldwide in the near future. Early diagnosis hence becomes extremely important. Various papers have proven that early identification of loss of smell and taste is of significance in the diagnosis of this disease. Some patients of COVID-19 may carry on suffering from loss of smell and taste even long after the other symptoms of the infection subside. The aetiology, pathology, and mechanism of loss of smell and taste are discussed in this article, pointing out that impairment of meridians, disturbed Brain-Shen and dysfunction of the Zang-Fu organs are the key pathology of loss of smell and taste by COVID-19. Traditional Chinese medicine resolution with acupuncture and Chinese herbs are therefore demonstrated accordingly, aiming to establish some practical and effective strategies to deal with loss of smell and taste. This unique presentation in the treatment illustrate that even though loss of smell and taste being a single symptom, it requires a profound understanding on the complicated and sophisticated background mechanism of the COVID-19, which is urgently in need of comprehensive treatment in time. Loss of smell and taste by COVID-19 is not only a minor suffering of the infection, but also a very critical part of a fully recovery of COVID-19, it shall not be left untreated.

In the last couple of months I have seen many cases with above symptoms and most of them are good response for the treatments, either acupuncture or combination with Chinese herbal medicine.

Post-viral fatigue syndrome, and long term covid syndrome are the two syndromes among long term effects of covid-19, according to the review published by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR)(1,2). They are affecting the respiratory system, the brain, cardiovascular system and heart, the kidneys, the gut, the liver, and the skin. The commonly seen symptoms of long covid include, but not least, fatigue, short of breath, poor memory, less concentration, insomnia, anxiety, depression, stress, palpitations, frequency urination, general aching, joints pain, et al.
Acupuncture, partly of Chinese medicine, has a long history and rich experiences to dealing with these health problems. In the last couple of months I have seen many cases with above symptoms and most of them are good response for the treatments, either acupuncture or combination with Chinese herbal medicine.
In terms of the techniques, scalp acupuncture are mostly unique for brain related symptoms, such as fatigue, poor memory, less concentration, insomnia, anxiety, depression, stress, etc. (3)
